Sheboygan family to get $250K compensation for loss of family member

A Sheboygan family who lost a family member in a 2011 truck accident is expected to receive $250,000 in compensation after a jury concluded that the city’s truck design contributed to the fatal accident, an April 15th article of the Sheboygan Press reported.

Reports said that Jaime Olivas died in 2011 after he was struck by a city truck driven by Gary Niemann. Though Olivas was partially at fault in the incident due to his inattentiveness while crossing the street, the jury ruled that the truck’s design, which had a leaf collector attached to the front, was a factor in the crash.

Niemann’s visibility of the road at the time of the crash was limited due to the leaf collector mounted in front of the vehicle he was operating. The Olivas family, who was initially seeking $1 million in compensation, and the city are not expected to file an appeal in the case.
