Michael Hastings body identified by county coroner

A coroner in Los Angeles confirmed that the burned body in a recent fatal crash is Rolling Stone magazine contributor Michael Hastings.

Results for Hastings’ cause of death were not yet available as toxicology results have yet to return. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office stated that these results will not be available for another eight to ten weeks. An autopsy was done on the burned body on June 19, allowing authorities to confirm that it was Hastings who was in the accident. Identification was made by matching prints to those on file with the FBI.

No foul play was found by police when investigating the scene.

Hastings car caught fire after it struck a tree near Hollywood on June 18. His death was initially announced by his employer and editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed, Ben Smith.
