Auto defect complaint triggers investigation

A driver of a 2012 Hyundai Elantra sent a complaint to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in regards to a potential auto defect, triggering an early investigation into the problem.

The complaint involved the driver’s side airbag. During an accident, a piece of metal detached from the interior of the vehicle when the airbag deployed. The man driving the Elantra claims that the metal shard cut through his ear, coming dangerously close to his neck.

The investigation into this claim is currently in the early stages, but if a defect is found, the NHTSA could issue a recall. This potential recall would affect approximately 123,000 Hyundai Elantras that were produced in 2012.
