Fatal accidents increase for women who drink and drive

In 1996, the fatal accident risk for males who drank and drove was two times higher than that for females. But, according to a new study using 2007 data, women are now on the same playing field as men when it comes to fatal drunk driving accidents.

Researchers found that as a person’s blood-alcohol level rose, so did their chances of being involved in a fatal accident, regardless of gender.  Women have begun to operate their vehicles more like men when they are intoxicated, and this reasoning has shown itself in the results.

The study also revealed that sober driving accidents have dramatically increased for males between 1996 and 2007. This is largely due to the amount of distracted driving that occurs, involving texting and other smart phone technology.
