Honda Expands Recall for Defective Airbags

Honda announced Monday that it was recalling an additional 833,000 vehicles for airbag defects.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automaker said that only about 2,400 of the additional 833,000 vehicles in the recall feature the defective airbags. The company said that about 2,400 vehicles involved in crashes received repair in which the previously recalled defective air bags were installed, rather than corrected units.

The automaker has not been successful in its attempts to locate all the potentially affected vehicles, the company said. The newly recalled models are some Honda Accords and Civics sold in the 2001 and 2002 model years, as well as 2002 Odysseys, 2003 CR-Vs, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2 TLs and the 2003 Acura 3.2 CL.

Honda spokesman Chris Martin said the company is aware of “a small number of injuries and two fatalities” resulting from the defective airbags.
