NHTSA: Ford Should Expand F-150 Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has told Ford Motor Corp. to expand its recall of F-150 pickup trucks.

David Strickland, the National Highway Traffic Administrator, said Wednesday the agency wants Ford to recall more than the 144,000 trucks from model years 2005-2006 that it agreed to February. A spokesman for the automaker confirmed that the company is in talks with the NHTSA about whether the recall should be expanded, but would not comment further.

The affected vehicles have air bags that may deploy when not needed, possibly injuring drivers or passengers. The recall came after a 2009 NHTSA investigation into 1.3 million of the pickup trucks.

Strickland did not specify how many additional vehicles the agency would like included in the recall.
