Kiel Woman in Critical Condition After Car Overturned in Sheboygan River

A woman was injured Tuesday morning when her car crashed into the Sheboygan River.

According to officials with the Sheboygan Police Department, 56 year-old Colleen A. Daniels, of Kiel, was traveling southbound on Highway 67 when she entered the gravel on the west shoulder of the roadway for an unknown reason. Police say she drove on the gravel for 96 feet before the car spun 90 degrees and began to slide. Authorities say the Honda CRV’s front tire then struck a guardrail on the eastside of the highway, causing the car to spin counter clockwise and strike the guardrail again. The vehicle flipped over the guardrail and landed on its roof in the Sheboygan River.

Police say Daniels lost consciousness shortly after a passerby pulled her from the vehicle. At which time the Samaritan flagged down another passing car, driven by Steve Gillis, of Watertown.

“As we were slowing down and starting to pull over, I could see the skid marks where something had hit the guardrail,” Gillis said. “Then I could see the rear tires of the car sticking out of the water.”

Daniels was transported to Theda Clark Hospital by Theda Star helicopter. She remains in critical condition.
