State Trooper Injured in Sheboygan Pedestrian Accident

A Wisconsin State Trooper was seriously injured Monday after being struck by a car while directing traffic in Sheboygan.

According to officials with the Wisconsin State Police, 51 year-old trooper Gary Markowski was struck shortly before 8:00 a.m. at the intersection of Interstate 43 and county Highway XX. Lt. Nick Scorcio said, in a news release, Markowski was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, Markowski was directing traffic for a crash that occurred around 7:00 a.m. when he was struck by a 1997 Buick Regal driven by 49 year-old Janna M. Mittelstaedt. She slid out of control before striking the trooper, Scorcio said.

Makowski was transported by ambulance to St. Nicholas Hospital after the accident. He was later transferred to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay.

The crash remains under investigation by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department.
